We don't buy sweaters because they're beautiful on the hanger. We buy them because they work over the tops and denim already hanging in your closet.

How we choose them

• Feel it against the inside of your wrist, not your hand. Your hands lie. Your wrist tells you whether you'll actually wear it.
• Look at how it holds its shape at the cuff and hem. That's where cheap knits go first, usually within one season.
• Decide whether it's a layer or the whole outfit. A fine gauge knit goes under a jacket. A chunky one is the outfit, so the bottom half should be simple.

Open cardigans in a mid weight are the shape we restock most, and stripe crewnecks are the sweater women are actually reaching for as the mornings cool off. Knits arrive weekly from August through November, so the floor looks different every time you come in.

What's the difference between a cardigan and a sweater for everyday wear?

A cardigan opens, so it works as a third piece over what you're already wearing and comes off when you're warm. A pullover is the top itself, so the rest of the outfit has to be planned around it. If you only buy one, buy the cardigan. It works harder. Come try both on together. You'll feel the difference in about four seconds.
