Trousers that don't feel like work clothes

The gap in most closets sits between jeans and leggings. Pants fill it, and they're the fastest way to look dressed without dressing up.

Fit notes

• Look at where the break falls. Wide leg should just brush the top of the shoe. Too long looks sloppy, too short looks accidental.
• Check the waistband construction. An elastic back with a flat front gives you comfort without the pajama read.
• Fabric decides the occasion. Linen is a weekend. Ponte and twill go anywhere.

What's strongest right now

Carpenter and utility pants are the strongest thing in our bottoms right now, along with drawstring poplin and anything in a striped knit. Linen keeps going well past summer here. This is the fastest changing part of our floor.

What do you wear with wide leg pants?

Something fitted or cropped on top, so the volume stays in one place. A rib tank, a fitted knit, or a tee half tucked at the front. Add a heel or a platform sneaker so the hem doesn't drag, and the whole outfit takes about a minute. Once you find the pair that fits, buy the second color. Everyone does.
